Womenʼs role in agricultural decisions in Vanuatu

Gender equality and womenʼs empowerment have driven the policy agenda of Pacific nations in recent years including policies aimed at improving the status of women in the agricultural sector. This study finds that women participate in many aspects of the production and postharvest of food and cash crops, contradicting some common beliefs about their role in agriculture in Vanuatu, but are less involved in decision-making processes. However, the study also finds womenʼs involvement in community life may be associated with higher influence and autonomy in decision-making.
